Situated on the south bank of the Río Claro, a tributary of the Maule, Talca lies 56 km south of Curicó. The most important city between Santiago and Concepción, it is a major manufacturing centre and the capital of Region VII, Maule. Founded in 1692, it was destroyed by earthquakes in 1742 and 1928. Today, it is a busy, dusty town, with a lively atmosphere day and night.

Getting around
Talca is a sizeable city, and some of the barrios are quite a distance from the centre. Buses and colectivos ply the routes to these areas, with their destinations marked in the window.Ins and outs
Getting there
Talca is easily accessible by bus and train from Santiago (both many times daily). There are also frequent connections to the towns further south, especially Chillán, Concepción, Temuco and Puerto Montt (several daily).

To Chillán, frequent service, US$4. To Temuco, 5½ hrs, US$10-16. To Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt, 9 hrs, US$16-26. Many buses to Santiago, 3½ hrs, US$6, and direct services to destinations as far north as Copiapó.
