Rancagua

The capital of Región VI, Rancagua lies 82 km south of Santiago, on the Río Cachapoal. The city was founded in 1743 and in October 1814 was the scene of an important battle during the Wars of Independence, when Bernardo O’Higgins and his 1700 Chilean patriots were surrounded in the centre of the town by 4500 Royalist (pro-Spanish) troops. O’Higgins managed to break out and escape but was forced into exile in Argentina, only to return within a few years finally to defeat the Spanish forces in Chile .
