From San Fernando, a road runs east towards the cordillera and divides: the southern branch of the road goes to the resort of Sierra Bellavista, a private fundo where many Santiago businesspeople have holiday houses, and where there are rodeos in October and November. The northern branch, a treacherous 75 km, runs to the Termas del Flaco near the Argentine border, where there are camping facilities, cabañas and several hotels and hospedajes. The thermal springs (US$3) are only open in the warmer months (October-Easter). Some 500 m from the Termas del Flaco are ‘Las huellas de dinosaurios’, dinosaur footprints preserved in the rock, dating from over 120 million years ago. There are good one-day treks starting from the baths, and a four-hour horse ride leads to the site of the Uruguayan plane crash immortalized in the film Alive.
