Fast-growing state with a unique heritage and great nature
Even though the Cold War ended two decades ago, Soviet-era bureaucracy and red tape continue to thrive here in the heart of Europe. Nevertheless, adventurous travelers can take advantage of Ukraine’s cultural heritage and extensive natural beauty. Kiev, the country’s economic, cultural, and political capital, has been a center of Slavic civilization and spirituality for more than a thousand years. Pilgrims and tourists alike will enjoy its many holy sites, including St. Sophia Cathedral and the Kiev Pechersk Lavra cave monastery, and there is no shortage of theaters or museums to enjoy. More than two-thirds of Ukraine’s population lives in urban areas, but nature-lovers will find plenty of opportunity for recreation among the country’s vast plains and along its beautiful Black Sea coast. Odessa is a popular resort and spa destination, but seclusion comes easier on the Crimean peninsula, which can be reached cheaply by plane or train (preferably overnight) from the capital.
