A primarily agricultural zone, the central region is lined with dramatic volcanoes, impressive scenery and the small towns of the Lempa Valley. Along the coast, quiet beaches and islands can be found on the way to the stunning Gulf of Fonseca to the east. In the north towards the mountain range bordering Honduras was an area of fierce disputes between the army and guerrillas during the civil war (1980-1992). Small communities are now rebuilt and opening up to visitors providing several small quaint villages offer ecotourism and original crafts. There are two border crossings to Honduras: to the north at Perquín, and the east at El Amatillo.
