Arriving at Tamarindo at dusk, the natural response is to dump your gear or stop the car with a screech of brakes and run for the beach – the sunsets are incredible and all shades of Tamarindo society migrate in daily pilgrimage for a pagan tribute to the sinking sun. Either side of the magic moment, Tamarindo is a flurry of activity that continues to grow in all directions – rapidly – and yet the place still retains a surfy, beachside attitude.
The beach is attractive, although not stunning, and has strong tides in places so take care if swimming. For surfers there are three good breaks providing a variety of options for the surf crowd that flock to town. Beyond surf and sun, the most popular excursion is an evening trip to Playa Grande and the leatherback nesting sights. While the town is driven by surfing, there’s a wide enough range of hotels and bars to make it a good beach stop – it’s lively, but not overly so.
