Air
Daily flights with SANSA, T2735-5017, http://www.flysansa.com (US$89) and NatureAir, T2735-5062, http://www.natureair.com (US$120). The airstrip is at the southeastern corner of town. Alongside the airstrip are the offices of Alfa Romeo Aero Taxi, T2735-5112, which provide alternatives to getting to out of the way places including Drake Bay and Carate.
Boat
A boat leaves the muellecito (small dock) from Golfito for Puerto Jiménez at 1120, US$4, 1½ hrs. The ferry leaves Puerto Jiménez at 0600. Alternatively you can charter a boat – US$80 for up to 8 passengers.
Bus
From San José buses leave the Terminal Atlántico Norte (C 12, Av 9-11) with Autotransportes Blanco Lobo and make the 8 hr journey to Puerto Jiménez at 1200, US$7, passing through San Isidro, Buenos Aires, Palmar Norte and Palmar Sur. The return bus leaves at 0500. Buses for Ciudad Neily leave at 0530 and 1400, 3 hrs, US$3.30. There’s a café by the bus stop where you can get a good, cheap breakfast (opens at 0430).
A couple of colectivos depart daily for Carate from Soda Thompson at 0600 and 1330, returning at 0830 and 1600, US$8. Services may be restricted in the wet season. Transport services are also provided by many tour operators.
Car
Leave the Pan-American Highway at Chacarita, 33 km south of Palmar Norte. The road is paved to Rincón – although there are some precipitous drops and horrendous potholes – and a fairly good gravel road for the remaining distance.
