On the banks of the Manawatu River and in the heart of flat, rural Manawatu, is the pleasant university and agricultural service town of Palmerston North. Although set away from SH1 and not exactly blessed with a wealth of tourist attractions, ‘Palmy’ can provide a good base from which to explore the southern half of the North Island and is an important gateway west, through the impressive Manawatu Gorge, to the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay. Other than Massey University, which is the second largest in the country, the town is perhaps most famous for its rugby museum, a place of almost spiritual significance, where many New Zealand rugby fanatics come on a pilgrimage to pay homage to their All Black heroes.
