Chetumal

Quintana Roo’s state capital, 240 km south of Tulum, is a necessary stopover for travellers en route to Maya sites in the south of the peninsula, and across the frontier to Belize and Guatemala. Although attractions are thin on the ground, Chetumal does have the advantage of being a small Mexican city not devoted to tourism and thus has a more authentic feel than other towns on the Riviera Maya. The Chetumal bay has been designated as a natural protected area for manatees and includes a manatee sanctuary.

The avenues are broad and busy and the centre is lined with huge shops selling cheap imported goods. The main local activity is window shopping, and the atmosphere is more like a North American city, with an impression of affluence that can be a culture shock to the visitor arriving from the much poorer country of Guatemala.

The paseo near the waterfront on Sunday night is worth seeing. The State Congress building has a mural showing the history of Quintana Roo.

Chetumal has its own charm of its own. People are very helpful. it is a lot quiet than the usual town in Riviera Maya.Los Cocos is a nice clean and quiet and cheaper, but meets the expectations of well travelled visitor.
