Some 13 km north of Tulum and 122 km from Cancún, is the beautiful clear lagoon of Laguna Xel-Há (US$10). It is full of fish, but fishing is not allowed as it is a national park. Snorkelling gear can be rented at US$7 for a day, but it is often in poor repair; it’s better to rent it from your hotel. Lockers cost US$1. Arrive as early as possible to see fish as the lagoon is full of tourists throughout most of the day. Snorkelling areas are limited by fencing.
Bungalows, first-class hotels and fast-food restaurants are being built. The food and drink is very expensive.
There is a marvellous jungle path to one of the lagoon bays. Xel-Há ruins, known also as Los Basadres are located across the road from the beach of the same name.
