Bicycle

Bikes can be hired in the village from Iguana Bike Shop, Calle Satélite Sur and Andrómeda, T984-119-0836 (mobile) or T984-871 2357; a good way to visit local centres (Cristal and Escondido which are recommended as much cheaper, US$2, and less commercialized than Xcaret).

Bus

Regular buses go up and down the coastal road travelling from Cancún to Tulum en route to Chetumal, stopping at most places in between. Some buses may be full when they reach Tulum; very few buses begin their journeys here. To Chetumal, frequent departures, 4 hrs, 2nd class, US$10, 1st class US$12. To Cobá, 8 departures daily, 45 mins, US$3. To Escárcega, ADO, 1645, 1715, 7 hrs, US$24.50. To Felipe Carrillo Puerto, frequent departures, 1½ hrs, US$5. To Mérida, ADO, 2400, 0140, 0500, 1240, 1430, 4 hrs, US$14; and several 2nd-class departures. To Mexico City, ADO, 1340, 23½ hrs, US$85.To Palenque, OCC, 1655, 1825, 10-11 hrs, US$34; and ADO GL, 2015, US$40.50. To San Cristóbal, OCC, 1655, 1825, 15 hrs, US$43.50; and an ADO GL, 2015, US$52. To Villahermosa, ADO, 1340, 2324, 11 hrs, US$38.

Taxi

Tulum town to Tulum ruins US$3-3.50; to the cabañas US$3.50; to Cobá about US$25 one way – bargain hard. Tucan Kin run shuttles to Cancún airport, T01800-702 4111 for reservations, about US$20-25 for 2 people, 1 hr 45 mins.

Banks

HSBC, Av Tulum open 0900-1900, has an ATM, but doesn’t change TCs. Scotiabank further along the same road is open Mon-Fri, 0900-1600, changes TCs and cash. Several casas de cambio in Av Tulum closer to the ADO terminal.

Long-distance phones in Av Tulum near and opposite the ADO terminal in town. Internet cafés in the same road.
