Coatepec is a sleepy coffee town just 12 km south of Xalapa and well worth a visit. The Zócalo is lined with good restaurants and open-front cafés where the aroma of fresh ground coffee permeates the air. Stock up on beans, wander the colonial streets or otherwise sample the gentle atmosphere. Northwest of the Zócalo, the Cerro de Culebra offers commanding views, whilst the tourist office (on the Zócalo) has good information and maps. To get to Coatepec, catch a bus from Xalapa’s Los Sauces terminal (30 minutes, $0.40) or take a taxi (20 minutes, US$10). There are plenty of lodgings, including several luxury options.
