Pie de la Cueasta is built on a sand dune
Twelve kilometres northwest of the city, Pie de la Cuesta is preferred by many budget travellers to Acapulco itself, but it is also commercialized. There are several bungalow- hotels and trailer parks , a lagoon, and long, clean, sandy beaches. Here, you can swim and fish year round, drink delicious coco loco (fortified coconut milk) and watch entrancing sunsets from your gently swaying hammock. If Acapulco’s hedonistic sprawl isn’t to your tastes, tranquil Pie de la Cuesta is a recommended alternative.
Just beyond town, Laguna Coyuca (also known as ‘La Barra’ or ‘Laguna Pie de la Cuesta’), over 10 km long, has interesting birdlife, water hyacinths and tropical flowers. These can be explored by motorboat, or by tour with a local outfit; Coyuca 2000 is best . Coyuca de Benítez, near the Laguna Coyuca, is a market town selling exotic fruit, cheap hats and shoes. Pelicans fly by the lagoons, there are passing dolphins and plentiful sardines. Locals are now trying to protect the turtle eggs that young boys (and dogs) like to hunt.
