Tuxtla Gutiérrez

Today, the city is an important administrative and cultural centre as well as a trans-shipment centre

Members of the Maya tribe the Zoque used to live in the region around today’s Tuxtla. They called their settlement Coyactocmo, which later turned into Tuxtlán. Both in Zoque and Náhuatl, the name means “Place of the Rabbits”. In the 16th century, other settlers soon followed the first Spanish monks; the settlers had to fight off many attacks from the Zoque Indians. In the beginning of the 19th century, Tuxtla was still an obscure place. In 1848, the city added the surname Gutiérrez and in 1892, the town replaced San Cristóbal de Las Casas as the capital of Chiapas.
