San Cristóbal de las Casas

A beautiful colonial city

One of Mexico’s most beautiful towns, San Cristóbal de las Casas is stunningly located in the fertile Jovel valley, with the mountains of Huitepec to the west and Tzontehuitz to the east. The city is a charming blend of colonial architecture and indigenous culture, laid out in the colonial period with 21 indigenous barrios on the city’s perimeter, which were later integrated into the totally mestizo city that existed by the 18th century. The indigenous population today is an important part of San Cristóbal’s atmosphere, many of them earning a living by selling handicrafts in the town’s two markets. The centre is rich in architectural variety, with excellent examples of baroque, neoclassical and plateresque, a Mexican style characterized by the intricate moulding of facades.
