Head south on the highway from Guaymas for 132 km and you’ll soon reach Ciudad Obregón, a rather dull agricultural centre, best avoided unless you’re in the market for cowboy gear or leather goods, or have more than a passing interest in the local indigenous people, the Yaqui. If you’re here on 16 July, there’s the annual Festival of the Yaqui Valley; 24 June is another important festival, when the tribe descends upon the Río Yaqui for a communal spiritual dip. There is also a Museum of the Yaquis (centre of town, Allende y 5 de Febrero) .
In nearby Cócorit, 7 km north, there is a newer Yaqui Museum (T644-418 3200, centrodeculturas@hotmail.com) home to the largest cultural display of the tribe in the country. Exhibits include art and craftwork such as masks, drums, embroidery, clothing and many other original pieces.
