Twenty minutes south of Pochutla along a pretty road, which winds through hilly forest country before dropping to the sea, is Puerto Angel. Tourism and fishing are currently the main economic activities here. The town lies above a beautiful flask-shaped bay; unfortunately the turquoise water is polluted, but there are hopes for improvement if a planned sewage system is installed. Because of its lovely setting and chilled-out vibe it has been described as ‘the ideal place to rest and do nothing’. The beach, right in town, is an ideal spot to watch the activity of the small charming dock. A short walk away, either along the road or on a concrete path built on the rocks (not safe at night), is Playa del Panteón, a small beach in a lovely setting, but crowded with restaurants (touts await visitors on arrival) and many bathers in season. There are cleaner and more tranquil nearby beaches east of town. Estacahuite, with simple cabañas, 1 km from town, about a 20-minute walk, has good snorkelling (gear rental from hut selling drinks and snacks) but beware of strong waves, currents and sharp coral that can cut you.
