Victoria de Durango, capital of Durango State, was founded in 1563 and quickly flourished thanks to the mineral rich mountains that form its backdrop. It is a modern city but retains a Wild West ambience with its wide roads, low buildings and baroque cathedral the colour of desert sand. Cowboys saunter along the pavements in jeans and Stetson hands, great silver belt buckles gleaming, whilst well-restored colonial structures hark back to a bygone era of elegance. The locals are sunny and gregarious, which some may find a welcome relief after the steely aloofness of other places further north. During the 20th century, the State of Durango served as a backdrop to not only Hollywood movies but also the Mexican film industry at its height. Classics such as The Wild Bunch by Sam Peckinpah (1968) or, more recently, The Mask of Zorro (1998) and Bandidas (2006) were filmed here.
