A quirky modern art museum in the park you can enjoy for free.
Mexico City’s modern art museum has a superb permanent collection of Mexican art. Memorable works include Orozco’s El Prometo, several oil paintings by Rivera and O’Gorman, and Siqueros’ legendary Nuestra Imagen. The real jewel in the crown is Frida Kahlo’s Las Dos Fridas, but the entire exhibition is a venerable tour de force and an impressive, sweeping portfolio of Mexico’s masters. The building itself consists of two circular structures pleasantly set among trees with sculptures in the grounds. Temporary exhibitions are usually held in the smaller of the two buildings; entrance through the larger one. The delightfully light architecture of the larger building is balanced by a heavy, marble staircase, with a curious acoustic effect on the central landing under a translucent dome. There is a good bookshop, gift shop and an open-air cafeteria behind the first building.
