The oldest part of Mexico City, 3 km east of San Angel, Coyoacán is the place from which Cortés launched his attack on the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán (the name means ‘place of the coyotes’ in Nahuatl). It is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved parts of the city, with elegant tree-lined avenues, hundreds of fine buildings from the 16th to 19th centuries and carefully tended parks – a world away from the hustle and grind of the centre. Culturally, Coyoacán is one of the liveliest parts of Mexico City, particularly at weekends, and is home to attractive cafés and good shops. The area is best explored on foot, which will take most of a day, although it’s often combined with a visit to San Angel.
