Colima seems exposed to the vagaries of nature
Located 179 km southeast of Guadalajara on Route 54 (US$12.75 in tolls), the capital of the state of Colima (Mexico’s smallest) was founded in 1527 and was formerly a Pacific port of great importance. It is now known to visitors primarily as the gateway to the coastal resort of Manzanillo , and a most charming and hospitable town in its own right, although it lives in the shadow of an active volcano (one of two in the region, Fuego and Nevado), which can be seen smoking 30 km to the north. Ironically, while encompassed by the Parque Nacional Volcán de Colima, both are located in the neighbouring state of Jalisco. The city also suffers from earthquakes, the latest of which was in January 2003. It damaged many buildings and killed at least 25 people, but the city recovered quickly and has rebuilt and repaired its churches and historical buildings.
