One of the most important locations around the lake
Chapala, 38 km southeast of Guadalajara via the motorway to the airport, is on the northern shore of the lake. Founded in 1538 by the Franciscan Friar Miguel Bolonia, the town and its nearby lakefront communities, have thermal springs, virtually perfect weather year-round (along with mesmerizing sunsets), several good hotels and restaurants, four golf courses and a thriving arts scene. Several great homes of the past lie strung along the waterfront, west of the post office. Others are scattered throughout Chapala’s centre (including one where DH Lawrence wrote The Plumed Serpent in the 1920s).
