The well-kept, small town of San José del Cabo stretches back to the 18th century
The largest town south of La Paz and founded in 1730, San José del Cabo is now a modern town divided into two districts: the very Americanized resort sectors and new Fonatur development on the beach, and the downtown zone to the north, with the government offices and many businesses grouped near the tranquil Parque Mijares. The attractive church on the Plaza Mijares was built in 1940 on the final site of the mission of 1730; a tile mosaic over the entrance depicts the murder of Padre Tamaral by rebellious locals in 1734.
