A pretty vacation spot!
The mountain resort of Valle de Bravo, on a branch road of Route 134, is a charming old town located on the edge of an attractive artificial lake. Formed by the construction of a hydroelectric dam, various sporting activities can be pursued on the water, including boating, kayaking, fishing and waterskiing. The surrounding forests are good for hiking, cycling and horse riding, while the nearby Barranca del Diablo (Devil’s Canyon), in the municipality of Santo Tomás, offers dramatic mountain scenery and rock paintings dating from AD 800. Braver souls might want to try paragliding or hang-gliding off the hills. The town’s main fiesta runs 26 February to 14 March, whilst the Festival de las Almas, late October to early November, brings international music and dance. Valle de Bravo has always been popular with wealthy chilangos, so expect large crowds and a feisty atmosphere at weekends and holiday periods. The tourist office (Díaz y Zaragoza, T726-262 1678, http://www.valledebravo.com.mx, 0900-1900) has plentiful information on sports operators and other local attractions.
Some 20 km from town, near the village of Los Saucos, is an important Monarch butterfly wintering site (November to March). Guides can be found through the tourist office or near the reserve entrance.
