Ixtapan de la Sal

On Route 55, 23 km from Tenancingo, Ixtapan de la Sal is a pleasant leisure resort with medicinal hot springs surrounded by forest. In the centre of this quiet whitewashed town is the municipal spa (daily 0700-1800, US$3) . At the edge of town is the privately run Spa y Parque Acuático (0900-1800, US$11) which has a train running around it and numerous picnic spots. For the hedonist there are ‘Roman’ baths; for the stiff-limbed, a hot-water pool; for the vain, mud baths. Several other luxury spa facilities are dotted around town. There’s also an Olympic pool and rowing boats. Market day is Sunday; a fiesta is held on the second Friday in Lent.
