Nearer Pinar del Río, another detour north off the Carretera Central at Entronque de San Diego, also in fine scenery, is to the spa of San Diego de los Baños and the Parque Nacional La Güira. In the wet season a nearby irrigation lake, the Embalse La Juventud, often floods and then this diversion becomes compulsory. San Diego de los Baños is a pretty little village, with colonnaded houses and a tree-lined square, right on the southern edge of the Sierra del Rosario. Its mineral waters were discovered in the 17th century and public thermal baths were opened in 1951 but the buildings are closed and the place empty, although you can still get a massage. The area was badly hit by Hurricane Ike in 2008 and has not completely recovered yet.
