Holguín was founded in 1545 as Hato San Isidro de Holguín, but most of the architecture in the centre dates from the 19th and 20th centuries. There are many statues and monuments to national heroes, several of which are around Plaza de la Revolución, on the edge of the city, the location of the modern City Hall and the Provincial Communist Party building. The town was named after García Holguín, a captain in the Spanish colonization force. It officially received the title of Ciudad de San Isidro de Holguín on 18 January 1752, when the population numbered 1426. The city has two universities, two big hospitals, a paediatric hospital, brewery and baseball stadium and is busy, although all traffic moves at the pace of the thousands of bicycles that throng the streets. There are several attractive excursions to be made from the city, with easy access to some of the best beaches in the country.

Getting around
It is easiest to walk around the centre as traffic is very slow, but for going further afield you can hop on a horse-drawn coche, or hire a bicitaxi. Tour agencies offer organized excursions but if you want to go on your own, car hire is available.
Holguín has the Frank País García international airport 12 km from town, a taxi ride into the centre. Most foreigners are on their way to the Guardalavaca beach resort and are transported by tour bus to their hotels. There are flights from Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Helsinki, London, Miami, Milan, Montréal, Toronto, Havana (CUC$101-105). The city is 19 km from the main Havana–Santiago railway line with daily train services in each direction. It is better served by long-distance buses. Víazul stops here on its Havana–Santiago and Trinidad–Santiago routes and runs buses to Guardalavaca in July and August for a day on the beach.
