This town was established in 1980 as the administrative centre for a new mountain district. There have been a large number of aid projects established in and around Thaba Tseka and there are, therefore, a disproportionate number of government and aid organization offices in the town. There are three roads into Thaba Tseka: from Leribe (Hlotse) via the Katse Dam (tarred as far as the dam followed by good gravel); a gravel road from Mokhotlong; and a decent gravel road from Maseru, tarred for about the first 50 km out of Maseru. This last one is a beautiful route, crossing the lowlands before ascending the first range of the Maluti Mountains via Bushman’s Pass (2268 m). It is commonly known as the Mountain Road because it was the first road into the mountains that could be negotiated by saloon car.
There is little of interest in the town itself, although it is a place through which most visitors to the central mountains will pass. The advent of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project has had considerable impact on Thaba Tseka. Apart from a good gravel road linkage, the project sponsored a skills training centre to enable inhabitants to acquire expertise that would help them find jobs with project contractors.
