Back on the Main North Road, Hlotse is the administrative centre of Leribe district (and is often also known simply as Leribe). Founded in 1876, it was an important town in the 1880 Gun War. Still to be seen today are the remains of a British fort and a primitive statue of a kneeling British soldier. The Anglican Church dates from 1877 and is the oldest building in town. About 8 km north on the old Butha-Buthe road, in the Subeng stream about 400 m downstream from the bridge, are three- and five-toed dinosaur tracks estimated to be 108-200 million years old. Ask for directions in the village.
