Oxbow has the last petrol until Mokhotlong and is also the centre of the Lesotho ski industry – as you’d expect, the industry isn’t exactly booming, but there’s a fairly new 1 km ski slope and a beginners area 11 km beyond Oxbow in a valley below the Mahlasela Pass (3220 m), which has a T-bar ski lift, a smaller rope lift and a snow-making machine. Operations are run by Afri-Ski , and the ski season generally runs from the beginning of June to the end of August, though the lodge is open all year round and offers other activities such as hiking. This Austrian-run outfit has built comfortable self-catering chalets at the site and there’s a shop for renting equipment. They can also arrange tuition.
