From Roma to Semonkong (85 km) the road climbs into the central mountains and the scenery becomes more dramatic, passing through tiny villages and past Lesotho horsemen in their gum boots and blankets. The tar road turns to gravel at Moitsupeli, 19 km beyond Roma, after which it continues to climb through Ramabanta (access point for the excellent Trading Post Adventures lodge) and into the Thabo Putsoa Mountains, peaking at 2000 m. Under normal conditions, the journey from Maseru to Semonkong (120 km) is about four hours and is manageable in a 2WD, though a 4WD is vital in winter or if it’s wet. Alternatively, there are two daily buses that takes about six hours and leave Maseru at 1000 and 1400. Semonkong is at the end of the road and is a small town that historically had a reputation for being a secret hideout of outlaws.
