Moyeni (‘place of the wind’) is the administrative centre of Quthing district (the town itself is often also called Quthing – ‘Qu’ means river in San). It was established as an administrative centre by the British in 1877 but was abandoned three years later during the Gun War, and later rebuilt. It’s a ramshackle town that straddles one main street running uphill from the Main South Road and the transport hub and a petrol station can be found at the bottom end. The town is in the far south of the lowlands at the point where the Senqu (Orange) River leaves the mountains and winds out across the flatter central South African plateau.
