Mafeteng is 36 km south on the Main South Road from Morija. The name means ‘the place of the passers by’. It is the main commercial and administrative centre for the southern lowlands. The town is a 15-minute drive from Van Rooyens border post (open 0600-2200) so this will be the first place you get to if crossing from Wepner in South Africa’s Free State. There are pleasant views from the town across the lowlands towards the Thaba-Putsoa range of mountains. The town suffered considerably during Lesotho’s 1998 riots. The British War Memorial, erected in memory of members of the Cape Mounted Rifles who died during the Gun War of 1880, is located near St John’s Primary School on the road from Mafeteng towards the Van Rooyens border post. The town has a large clothing factory that manufactures for Gap.
