Mohales Hoek

This is a pleasant town named after King Moeshoeshoe’s younger half-brother. There are San cave paintings in the cliffs beside the Main South Road as you enter town from the north, but they are difficult to get to. There are also paintings in various caves about 10 km from the Main South Road up the Maphutseng Valley. Although there is nothing to see in town, the most interesting story behind this region are the Cannibal Caves, 2 km south near the Agricultural Training Farm. Found throughout Lesotho, they are a reminder of lifaqane, ‘the terrible time’, when in the 1820s roving bands of warriors fleeing the Zulu attackers prevented farmers from growing crops, and people resorted to cannibalism to survive. The Makhaleng Bridge border crossing is close to Mohales Hoek.
