Richards Bay, a modern rash of a town, focuses entirely on its enormous industrial port, soon to be the largest in southern Africa. The port exports mineral ores and coal, and massive tankers arrive here to discharge oil for Gauteng through the oil pipeline; this is the first port of call for ships coming from Asia and Suez. Characterized by a series of vast industrial plants and featureless highways (albeit skirting around a pretty series of canals and a lagoon), the only reason for coming here is to use the small airport , and then hire a car to speed up the coast to the parks.
