Southbroom is a popular resort with subtropical trees coming down to the beach. It consists mainly of private holiday homes belonging to wealthy Gautengers and can feel deserted out of season. There is safe swimming in a tidal pool just down the coast at Marina Beach, a beautiful 5-km stretch of sand and rolling dunes.
The Riverbend Crocodile Farm and Art Gallery Old National Rd, T039-316 6204, http://www.crocodilecrazy.co.za, daily 0900-1630, feeding time Sun 1500, small entry fee, breeds around 200 Nile crocodiles. There is also a snake house, with snake handling demos every day at 1430. On Tuesday and Thursday (by appointment only) you can visit a large banana packing shed on the farm. It also has a tea garden, restaurant, farm stall and art gallery.
Mpenjati Nature Reserve sunrise to sunset, R10, children (under 12) R5, is 12 km south of Southbroom and is popular with windsurfers, canoeists and fishermen. The reserve covers a small area of coastal forest and wetlands along the edge of the lagoon and is good for spotting wetland and woodland birds including a resident pair of breeding fish eagles. There are some leisurely walking trails along the Mpenjati River and around the lagoon, with two picnic spots.
