The Srtrelitzia Coast is one of the more built-up areas south of Durban. Driving down the N2, the road passes Durban’s international airport and goes through an extensive industrial belt. Amanzimtoti, or ‘toti’, only 22 km south of Durban, is effectively a suburb, a huge built- up holiday resort with little to keep you in town. The Zulu name translates as ‘sweet waters’, as described by Shaka. Thousands of locals spend their annual holiday here, swimming, soaking up the sun and partying. A wide range of holiday accommodation is available among the high-rise flats and holiday homes facing the beach. Inyoni Rocks and Pipeline Beach are the two main beaches for swimmers and sunbathers, behind which is a busy main road. On the outskirts of town is a large chemical factory and an explosives factory. However, the lagoons beyond Amanzimtoti have been spared the relentless pace of development and these havens of tropical vegetation are sanctuaries for the coast’s prolific birdlife.
