Durban

South Africa’s Third City

Nestled among the shores of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Province, Durban is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city that blends traditional African culture with an export-driven, globalized urbanism. Five centuries ago, the Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama first laid eyes on the region’s coastline, and it has since grown into one of the world’s great economic crossroads, where merchants, laborers and adventurers from three continents still come to seek their fortunes. However, those who come for more leisurely pursuits are certain at some point to end up at the Golden Mile, Durban’s well-developed seaside recreation area. Many of the city’s most popular beaches, surf spots and tourist attractions can be found along this lengthy promenade, which extends north from the uShaka Aquarium & Marine Reserve to the recently-built Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World. Further inland, Durban offers a wide range of cultural sites that reflect its history of conquest and immigration: Durban City Hall is one of the town’s main landmarks, and its modern Renaissance architecture contains a world-class history museum, complete with Egyptian relics and a vast collection of South African artwork. Phezulu Safari Park, located on Botha’s Hill in the Valley of 1000 Hills, is a recreated Zulu village that offers its visitors an up-close view of traditional beehive-shaped thatched huts, as well as insights into Zulu folk dances, beliefs and rituals.
