Often referred to as the gateway to, or the capital of, the Garden Route, George owes its status to the fact that it has an airport. It is also an important junction between the N2 coastal highway and the N9 passing through the Outeniqua Pass into the Karoo. It lies in the shadow of the Outeniqua Mountains, but unlike the majority of towns along the Garden Route, it is not by the sea. The town itself is a mostly modern grid of streets interspersed with some attractive old buildings and churches. While it is pleasant enough, it has little appeal compared to other towns along the coast; the main reason overseas visitors come here is to play golf. George has several outstanding golf courses and received worldwide attention in November 2003 when it hosted the President’s Cup Golf Tournament. More recently it hosted the inaugural Women’s World Cup of Golf.
