These villages, 12-14 km from town on the western shores of the lagoon, are in many ways really smart suburbs of Knysna. Brenton has the great attraction of having the nearest sandy beach (Brenton-on-Sea), making it very popular during the school holidays. There is a fine hotel and a limited selection of seaside cottages. Belvidere is primarily a leafy residential suburb along the banks of the river where it enters the lagoon. A large proportion of the village is made up of the relatively new Belvidere Estate, a prestigious development on 67 ha, made up of large houses and gardens.
The small village church, Belvidere Church, is a popular attraction in the area and is a miniature replica of a Norman church. It was built in 1855 from local stone and timber, with picturesque stained-glass windows and stinkwood fittings. The rose window on the west side was installed in 1955. Further along the road is the seaside resort of Brenton-on-Sea.
