Manizales

Manizales is a comparatively new city, founded in 1848 by a group of settlers from Antioquia looking for a peaceful place at a time of civil disturbances further north. As a result, Manizales has the feel of a late 19th-century city with ‘republic’ period architecture and a fierce pride in Los Fundadores, the founders of the city. However, this area is unstable geologically and was struck by severe earthquakes in 1875 and 1879 only to be followed by fires that swept through the city in 1925 and especially 1926, severely damaging the centre. The city is now dominated by its enormous cathedral, not unreasonably of reinforced concrete, and still to be finished. Two previous cathedrals on the site were destroyed and even this one suffered during an earthquake in 1979. Yet another threat to the city is the Nevado del Ruiz volcano seen to the southeast, which erupted in November 1985, but most of the damage done was to communities on the side away from Manizales.
