Capital of Risaralda Department, 56 km southwest of Manizales, Pereira, stands within sight of the Nevados of the Cordillera Central. Pereira is situated on a small plateau, bounded to the south by the Río Consota and to the north, the Río Otún, about 140 m below. Beyond the Otún is Dosquebrados, an industrial town, now virtually part of the city, and dramatically linked by a viaduct. It is the largest city in this part of Colombia and acts as the centre of the Zona Cafetera with the appropriate range of official and commercial institutions and services. It has a very pleasant climate, though the green countryside around indicates a regular rainfall, usually short, sharp showers. Apart from coffee and cattle, there is a wide variety of local agricultural produce and you will notice the high quality of the food available here. Unfortunately this is an active seismic zone and earthquakes periodically damage Pereira. In 1995 significant damage was done to some buildings in the centre and again in January 1999 it was affected by the serious quake that devastated Armenia.
