Locally shortened to Villavo (Vee-a-bo), Villavicencio is the capital of Meta Department. This is where llaneros come to stock up on provisions and blow off a little steam in the city’s bars and clubs. Founded in 1840 by Esteban Aguirre, it was originally a staging post and market for the ranching activities of the Llanos, conveniently on the way to Bogotá. Villavicencio is a good centre for visiting the llanos stretching 800 km east as far as Puerto Carreño and Puerto Inírida on the Orinoco. Cattle raising is the great industry on the plains, sparsely inhabited mostly by mestizos.
