An important starting point for trips into the Pantanal, Cuiabá is the state capital and a visibly wealthy city. It has a number of leafy praças and is known as the ‘Cidade Verde’ (green city). Situated on the Rio Cuiabá, an upper tributary of the Rio Paraguai, it is in fact two cities: Cuiabá on the east bank of the river, and Várzea Grande on the west. It is very hot; the coolest months for a visit are June, July and August in the dry season.
