Africa’s Serene Mountain Kingdom
This small, landlocked country wedged between South Africa and Mozambique takes its name from the Swazi, a Bantu-speaking people who replaced the region’s original Khoisan inhabitants many centuries ago. The national capital is Mbabane, but its centrally located commercial center is Manzini, a good place to arrange sightseeing and cultural excursions. The nearby Mantega craft market and cultural village can be reached with minimal hassle, but those with more time should consider heading to one of the country’s spectacular national parks. Hlane Royal National Park, whose name translates to “wilderness,” is the largest of these, and it is conveniently located on the road to Mozambique. At Mkhaya Game Reserve, guests can take a guided walking tour in search of elephants, rhinos, and giraffes. Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is the oldest and most popular park in the country, due in large part to the relative spaciousness and luxury of its accommodations.
