The high Andes to the west of Mendoza city are the world’s highest mountains outside the Himalayas, and offer some of the country’s most amazing scenery. The spectacular setting offers hiking, mountain climbing and adventures of all kinds, and is easily accessible from Route Nacional 7 to Chile, and simply driving west along Route 7 is an unforgettable experience. Alta Montaña is an essential part of any trip to the province, even if you’re not crossing the border, or planning to climb Aconcagua. From the pretty oasis town of Uspallata, the road to Chile climbs up between the jagged snow-capped mountains, with staggering views of Volcán Tupungato in the distance to the south and Aconcagua closer at hand to the north. In winter, you’ll quickly reach the snowline, the charming small ski resort of Los Penitentes and, beyond it, the natural wonder of the bridge at Puente del Inca, near the base for climbing Aconcagua. The road climbs finally to the border crossing at Túnel Cristo Redentor, and if you continue to Chile, the steep descent on the other side offers yet more superb views. In winter, this road is sometimes blocked by snow, so check conditions from Mendoza or Uspallata before setting off.
