More than 6,000 feet high, Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal. The Buddhist tradition dates back thousands of years, and Kathmandu’s "old" city is noted for its many Buddhist and Hindu temples and palaces. Since it lies in an earthquake zone, many of these landmarks have been damaged through the centuries - a primary reason that most of the newer buildings are quite small. The whole city is a sort of sprawling jumble of new and old, and you may come to believe that the monkeys outnumber the humans. Trekking to see the Monkey Temple is a special and highly recommended trip. It is the oldest shrine in the valley, and when you get out of congested Kathmandu will help you to take in the inherent beatitude of Nepal. During October and November, when the monsoons have passed, is the best time to visit. The Nepalese have an incredibly peaceful culture that has been the target of Maoist attacks in the past. A lot of the Maoist violence is directed at Tibetan refugees fleeing to Nepal illegally. The Dalai Lama used to run two Tibetan centers in Kathmandu, but in 2005 such problems led to their being closed down.
