The Carretera Binacional, from Ilo on the coast to La Paz, has a breathtaking stretch from Moquegua to Desaguadero at the southeastern end of Lake Titicaca. It skirts Cerro Baúl and climbs through zones of ancient terraces at Camata to its highest point at 4755 m. At 4610 m is lonely Restaurant Humajalso. On the altiplano there are herds of llamas and alpacas, watery bofedales, lakes with waterfowl, strange mountain formations and snow-covered peaks. At Mazo Cruz there is a PNP checkpoint where all documents and bags are checked. As you approach Desaguadero, the Cordillera Real of Bolivia comes into view. The road is fully paved but should only be taken in daylight.
