Nazca to Chile

From Nazca to the Chilean border the coastal desert continues, broken by the occasional irrigation scheme. In places the dunes are otherwordly. There are a few ports, old ones such as Puerto Inca, which served Imperial Cuzco, and new ones like Matarani. If you head south on the Panamericana, instead of turning off at the junction to Arequipa and the sierra, you reach the fruitful valley of Moquegua. This town has many historical associations and is the start of a great road up to Lake Titicaca. On the border with Chile is the city of Tacna, seemingly a long way from anywhere else in Peru.
