Tumbes, about 141 km north of Talara, and 265 km north of Piura, is the most northerly of Peru’s provincial capitals. It is not the most beautiful, but it does have some interesting historic wooden buildings in the centre. Tumbes is also a garrison town, so watch where you point your camera. Mosquito repellent is a must for the Tumbes area.

Getting Around
Everything is fairly conveniently located close to the Plaza de Armas, although transport to the Ecuadorean border is a little bit further out. Hotels are mostly central to the north of the river either side of Avenida Tumbes and Bolívar.
A taxi to the airport costs US$4, 20 minutes. Combis charge US$1.50. Taxis meet flights to take passengers to the border for US$7-9. There are no combis from the airport to the border. Beware of overcharging. All the bus companies have offices on Avenida Tumbes.
